The Power of Mentorship: Transforming Lives with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware
Every Child Deserves a Mentor
Behind every successful individual is someone who believed in them. For many children in Delaware, that person is a mentor from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware (BBBSDE). With a mission to create and support mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth, BBBSDE has been changing lives since 1964.
How Big Brothers Big Sisters Makes a Difference
BBBSDE provides at-risk youth with carefully matched adult mentors who serve as role models, friends, and sources of guidance. These evidence-based mentoring relationships are proven to boost self-confidence, improve academic performance, and reduce risky behaviors.
Each mentor-child pair, or Big and Little, is supported by BBBSDE’s trained staff to ensure a safe, effective, and lasting connection. Studies show that mentored youth are:
- 55% more likely to enroll in college
- 78% more likely to volunteer in their communities
- 46% less likely to use drugs

A History of Changing Lives
Founded in 1964, BBBSDE was created to address Delaware’s growing need for positive role models for at-risk youth. By 1974, the organization expanded to include Big Sisters, officially forming Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware.
Today, over 1,400 youth are matched with mentors annually, with BBBSDE continuing to innovate mentoring programs tailored to modern challenges, including life skills education and drug abuse resistance programs.
Other Ways to Support BBBSDE
Not everyone can commit to being a mentor, but there are many ways to support the mission:
- Donate: Every dollar helps BBBSDE provide life-changing mentorship programs. 100% of donations stay in Delaware.
- Spread Awareness: Share BBBSDE’s mission with your network and encourage others to get involved.
