Major Taxiway Improvement Coming to Delaware Coastal Airport

Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown is set for a significant upgrade, with a $13 million taxiway improvement project scheduled to begin in early 2025. The multi-phase construction, funded through a combination of federal and Sussex County resources, aims to enhance the airport’s infrastructure to support future growth and improve operational efficiency.

Key Project Details

  • Start Date: Expected groundbreaking in March 2025
  • Total Cost: $13 million
  • Funding Sources: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grants and Sussex County contributions
  • Scope: Construction of a full-length, 35-foot-wide taxiway for the primary runway

Phased Construction and Federal Support

The Delaware Coastal Airport Advisory Committee recently met to discuss progress on the six-phase project. The FAA is expected to provide around $3 million per year in airport improvement entitlement funding, while Sussex County’s share is estimated at $1.3 million.

According to Robert Bryant, Airport Manager, construction will roll out in multiple grant cycles over the next several years. “We figure this time next year, we’ll get a third FAA grant that will construct Phase 3 of the project,” Bryant stated.

Projected Completion Timeline

If all goes as planned, the taxiway improvements should be completed between 2026 and 2027, ensuring a safer and more efficient airport for pilots and passengers alike.

Wilmington ILG Airport Expansion Underway

In addition to the improvements at Delaware Coastal Airport, Wilmington ILG Airport in New Castle has also begun a $9.8 million passenger terminal expansion, with completion expected in late 2025.

Both projects highlight a significant investment in Delaware’s airport infrastructure, improving connectivity and positioning the state for continued aviation growth.
