Nassau Commons Boulevard Construction Near Redner’s in Lewes to Cause Summer Traffic Delays
Roadwork is officially underway again on Nassau Commons Boulevard in Lewes, and just in time for the busy summer season. With construction resuming near the Redner’s grocery store, both locals and vacationers are being urged to plan ahead.
What’s Happening?
Led by A-Del Construction, this project involves:
-
Water main upgrades
-
Storm drain installations
-
Full roadway reconstruction
While this is a critical infrastructure upgrade, it comes with a significant catch:
🚧 The entrance from Route 9 to Nassau Commons Boulevard will be closed, leaving only one way in and out for all drivers.
Timeline and Impact
Work is expected to continue for about two months, pushing deep into the heart of Delaware’s summer tourism season. For a corridor that serves one of the busiest shopping areas in the region, including Redner’s and other local businesses, this creates a perfect storm of:
-
Longer wait times at signals
-
More congestion on detour routes
-
Delayed shopping trips for both residents and visitors
Local shopper Hal Faden of Lewes shared his concerns:
“It’s hectic, because it does get backed up at the light there. So it’s just probably going to take a couple extra minutes. I guess more patience would be involved, you know, to get your shopping done.”
Long-Term Benefits
While the short-term delays are frustrating, the Delaware Department of Transportation says this work will pave the way (literally and figuratively) for a much-needed improvement:
🔴 A new traffic light at the intersection of Nassau Commons Boulevard and Route 9—aimed at reducing bottlenecks and improving safety.
A Brief History of the Project
Originally launched in December 2024, the project was paused just days after it began. This spring’s restart brings it back online with a completion goal that extends through early summer 2025.
