Heads Up, Milton Drivers: New Lane Closures Start May 1 at SR 1 and SR 16
Bridge work continues—here’s how it’ll impact your commute
If you drive through the SR 1 and SR 16 intersection in Milton, here’s something you’ll want to know: starting Thursday, May 1, DelDOT is rolling out new lane closure hours as part of the ongoing construction on the SR 1 northbound bridge.
This project isn’t a quick fix—lane closures and traffic changes will be sticking around until late fall 2025, with the full project expected to wrap up sometime in early 2026.
🛣️ What to Expect on SR 1
You’ll only see lane closures here at night, which should help with daytime travel—but evening and overnight drivers should plan ahead.
-
Monday to Thursday: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
-
Friday to Sunday: 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM
Late-night commuters and weekend travelers, take note: expect lane shifts, slower traffic, and possibly some delays.
🚧 What to Expect on SR 16
SR 16 will see both daytime and nighttime closures, so if this is part of your daily route, you’ll want to factor that into your plans.
-
Daytime (Mon–Fri): 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
-
Nighttime (Mon–Fri): 6:00 PM to 7:00 AM
-
Weekends: 9:00 PM to 9:00 AM
Expect some interruptions whether you’re running morning errands or heading home after dinner.
🚦 Why It Matters
This bridge work is all part of long-term infrastructure improvements, but in the short term, it means slower traffic, possible detours, and more orange cones than you’d like.
Take it slow in work zones, follow posted signs, and if you can, avoid peak closure times to save yourself the hassle.
