As Delaware emerges from a significant snowstorm, which left much of the state blanketed in 6 to 10 inches of snow, residents are bracing for another round of wintry weather expected this Saturday. While crews have worked tirelessly to clear primary routes, icy conditions persist on secondary roads, and with more snow on the horizon, staying prepared is crucial.

What to Expect This Saturday

The National Weather Service has forecasted additional snowfall that could complicate travel and delay recovery efforts from the earlier storm. Cold temperatures and gusty winds will continue to pose challenges for snow removal and road safety. With road conditions likely to deteriorate again, residents are urged to monitor updates and consider postponing unnecessary travel.

A Collaborative Effort

Governor John Carney activated the Delaware National Guard to support storm response operations earlier this week. DelDOT and other agencies have deployed hundreds of pieces of snow removal equipment, focusing on keeping major routes like I-95, Route 1, and Route 13 open and passable.

The Delaware Emergency Management Agency (DEMA) and the Department of Transportation (DelDOT) remain vigilant, with resources such as 24-hour live traffic updates on 1380 AM and the DelDOT mobile app providing real-time road conditions.

Driving Tips for Winter Safety

As another storm approaches, here are key safety tips for navigating snow-covered roads:

  • Clear Your Vehicle: Remove snow and ice from windshields, headlights, and the tops of vehicles to ensure visibility and avoid creating hazards for other drivers.
  • Slow Down: Drive at or below the speed limit and adjust your speed to road conditions.
  • Keep Distance: Maintain extra space between your car and the vehicle ahead to allow for reaction time.
  • Use Low Beams: Headlights should be on in poor visibility, and low beams are preferable to high beams.
  • Brake Gently: Apply brakes carefully, especially on bridges, overpasses, and ramps that freeze faster than other surfaces.
  • Be Aware of Intersections: Anticipate other drivers making unexpected moves and adjust accordingly.
  • Know How to Handle Skids: Stay calm, steer in the direction you want to go, and avoid slamming the brakes.
