Join the Fun at Delaware’s Most Exciting Pumpkin-Throwing Event!

Rehoboth Beach, DE, is gearing up for an exhilarating event as Sling N’ Squash returns to Big Chill Surf Cantina on November 9, marking its seventh consecutive year of thrilling pumpkin-throwing action. From 12 noon to 5 p.m., competitors from Delaware and beyond will gather at this beloved surf shack to launch pumpkins into the sky, promising a day filled with unexpected surprises and spontaneous fun. Since its inception in 2017, Sling N’ Squash has celebrated the spirit of the now-defunct Punkin’ Chunkin competition, which originated in Milton, DE, in 1986. The event aims to honor that legacy while introducing a unique twist: competitors can only use their bodies—no machines allowed—to hurl the pumpkins.Matt Garbutt, Director of Marketing and Branding for La Vida Hospitality, describes it as “an Olympic sport for amateur pumpkin throwers.” He adds, “We don’t take ourselves too seriously at Big Chill Surf Cantina, but we take this sport very seriously! We’re excited to welcome both familiar faces and newcomers as they vie for squash supremacy!”

Competition Details

Participants will throw 15-18 lb. pumpkins from a designated 6’x6’ throwing area, with throws measured from where the pumpkins first hit the ground. The top three throwers will advance to the Finals for a chance to win cash prizes:

• 1st Place: $250 Cash Prize
• 2nd Place: $100 Cash Prize
• 3rd Place: $50 Cash Prize

Registration is set at $30 per competitor, which includes a limited-edition T-shirt. Additionally, $15 from each registration will be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project in honor of Veterans Day.

Spectator Information

For those who prefer to watch the action, admission is Free for spectators aged 21 and older. Attendees can enjoy a variety of food, drinks—including beer and cocktails—and live music throughout the day. All pumpkins will be sourced from Fifer Orchards, supporting local agriculture.
