Rehoboth Avenue Repaving Resumes in April
DelDOT Returns to Complete Roadwork Before Summer Season
Rehoboth Avenue’s long-awaited repaving project is set to resume in April as the Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) works to complete what was started last fall. Weather permitting, construction will likely restart in the second week of April, ensuring the project is finished before the busy summer season.
Delays Due to Cold Weather
Paving began in the fall, with crews successfully completing the stretch from the bandstand to 2nd Street. However, colder-than-expected temperatures in mid-December forced DelDOT to halt work, as frigid conditions can negatively affect asphalt quality. Now that warmer weather is returning, the project is back on schedule.
Scope of the Work and Timeline
The final phase of the project includes milling and paving between 2nd Street and the traffic circle. Work is expected to take approximately one month, with completion anticipated by Friday, May 16. Additional improvements include permanent striping east of 2nd Street, which will be applied with minimal traffic disruptions.
To minimize the impact on businesses and visitors, A-Del, the contractor managing the project, will conduct work overnight from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday evening through Friday morning.
Traffic and Parking Adjustments
During construction, lane closures and parking restrictions will be in place within work zones. Flaggers will be on-site to direct traffic and maintain safety. The city and contractor are working together to keep parking accessible where possible. For example, if storefront parking is closed in a given area, median parking will remain available when feasible.
What to Expect
Residents, businesses, and visitors should anticipate some overnight disruptions but can look forward to smoother road conditions once the project is complete. By mid-May, Rehoboth Avenue will be fully repaved and ready to welcome the summer crowds with improved infrastructure and accessibility.
