Delawareans: Help Stamp Out Hunger on May 10—Nation’s Largest One-Day Food Drive Returns
Prepared by Delaware Beaches Online
On Saturday, May 10, Delawareans have a simple yet powerful opportunity to fight hunger—right from their mailboxes.
The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) is leading the charge with the 32nd annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the largest single-day food collection effort in the United States. All you need to do? Fill a bag with nonperishable food items and leave it next to your mailbox before mail delivery.
🛍️ How It Works
Participation is easy and impactful. Here’s what you need to do:
-
Gather nonperishable food items (see the suggested list below)
-
Place the items in a bag (any bag will do—no glass containers, please)
-
Leave the bag by your mailbox on Saturday, May 10, before your mail is delivered
-
Your local letter carrier will collect it and deliver it to a nearby food pantry
You may receive an official recyclable donation bag in the mail, but don’t worry if it doesn’t arrive—you can use any sturdy bag to make your donation.
🥫 What to Donate
Consider donating shelf-stable, nutritious foods that are in high demand:
-
Peanut butter
-
Cereal
-
Canned meats (tuna, chicken, etc.)
-
Canned fruits & vegetables
-
Rice
-
Pasta
These items help stock local food banks and pantries, supporting families in our community who are facing food insecurity.
🤝 Supported by the Community
This year’s drive has widespread support from labor and community partners including:
-
NALC Local 191
-
Communications Workers of America Local 13101
-
United Food & Commercial Workers
-
Delaware Building & Construction Trades Council
-
IBEW Local 313
-
Good Works Corporation
-
United Steelworkers
-
Delaware State AFL-CIO
Their collective efforts ensure that every donation is efficiently collected and distributed to those in need across Delaware.
🙋♀️ Want to Do More? Volunteer!
In addition to donating food, Delawareans can volunteer to help unload postal trucks at local post offices. It’s a hands-on way to be part of the solution.
📦 A Legacy of Giving
Since 1993, the Stamp Out Hunger campaign has delivered over 1.8 billion pounds of food nationwide. That kind of impact is only possible because neighbors show up for each other—year after year.
Let’s keep the tradition going.
💛 Why It Matters
Food insecurity is a persistent challenge in our state. One in ten Delawareans struggles to access the nutrition they need. With just a few items from your pantry, you can help a child eat breakfast, a parent prepare dinner, or a senior stay nourished.
On May 10, make a difference without leaving your street. Stamp out hunger—one bag at a time.
