What’s Your Ocean Story? DNREC Wants to Hear It

There’s something about the ocean.
Maybe it’s the roar of the waves, the salty breeze, or memories of toes buried in warm sand. Maybe it’s deeper—like the way your job, your childhood, or your family legacy is tied to the water. Whatever it is, if the ocean has shaped you in some way, DNREC wants to hear your story.

In celebration of Ocean Month this June, the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) is inviting Delawareans to share their personal “ocean connection” stories. From childhood wonder and family traditions to working life and coastal conservation, every story counts.

“Ocean lovers all have an ocean story,” said Kristi Lieske, Ocean Planner with DNREC’s Division of Climate, Coastal and Energy. “Whether it’s a childhood fascination with the creatures beneath the surface, the allure of unearthing buried treasure alongside a loved one or how your own livelihood has been shaped by the sea, all stories matter.”

Your Story Could Be Featured—Or Win a Prize

Submitted stories will become part of a public story catalog, with a few selected for special features on DNREC’s social media and publications during June.

Plus, all participants will be entered into a raffle for a DNREC prize pack—a little thank-you for helping to showcase Delaware’s rich maritime connection.

And there’s more: some stories may even be used as part of the Delaware Ocean and Bay Plan, a vital planning document that helps guide responsible, sustainable use of Delaware’s coastal and ocean waters.

Why This Matters Now

Delaware’s coast is changing—fast.

Rising seas, warming waters, and increased demand for space in the ocean (like for shipping, offshore energy, or even underwater transmission lines) mean we need to better understand and plan for what comes next.

The Delaware Ocean and Bay Plan is DNREC’s effort to keep ocean use smart, balanced, and respectful of the ecosystems and people who depend on them.

And that starts with your voice.
