A Museum That Tells the Story of Delaware’s Coastline

Located in the heart of downtown Lewes, the Zwaanendael Museum is one of Delaware’s most captivating hidden gems. Modeled after the town hall in Hoorn, Netherlands, the building itself is a tribute to Lewes’ Dutch heritage—but step inside, and you’ll find a deep dive into the region’s shipwrecks, sea legends, and maritime lore.

One of the museum’s most beloved and bizarre attractions is The Merman—a 19th-century curiosity made of fish skin, wire, clay, and animal parts. Once known locally as the “Zwaanendael Fiji Merman,” the figure was gifted to a Lewes family by a sea captain. It’s been a source of fascination ever since, lovingly returned to the museum in 1985 by a local group called the “Friends of the Merman Society.”

A Lighthouse Lost to the Sea

Exhibits include haunting photographs and stories of the Cape Henlopen Lighthouse, a historic beacon that fell into the Atlantic Ocean after a massive storm in 1926. Visitors can view aerial images showing how the coastline has shifted dramatically over the last century—an ongoing story of nature reclaiming the land.

Explore Delaware’s Shipwreck History

One of the most visually stunning features of the museum is a shipwreck map, pinpointing the names and dates of vessels lost off Delaware’s coast. You’ll find more than just dry data here—there are real artifacts and even interactive displays where you can touch pieces of pottery, glass, and stoneware recovered from local shipwrecks.

Touch the Past—Literally

Thanks to archaeological work and dredging efforts at Roosevelt Inlet, over 40,000 artifacts have been discovered—many on public beaches! At the Zwaanendael Museum, you’ll find some of these items on display and a table where guests of all ages are encouraged to physically interact with recovered fragments of history.

Whether you’re into maritime legends, shipwrecks, or coastal archaeology, the Zwaanendael Museum is a must-visit destination for curious minds of all ages. Admission is free, and new exhibits are always on the horizon.
